These four classical shapes are very similar and often confused. They all have straight long shank, short stem and billiard bowl. The differences are in the shapes of shank and stem.
Pickaxe is a freehand pipe shape with bird eyes on front and back of the bowl. The shape is very simular to elephant foot, so different pipe makers choose different names for same pipes.
Smooth pipes — pipes with smooth finish — sanded and polished pipes.
Bamboo is not only a decoration, it's a very hygroscopic material, which makes the smoke dryer.
Ebonite (vulcanite) stem is more soft and comfortable for teeth, than acrylic. So I prefer to use ebonite in pipes, which are short and light enough for smoking in teeth.
