Smoking Pipes with Bamboo
Bamboo is unique material for smoking pipes shanks. It is very-very hygroscopic, so it can absorb moisture even better than the briar. And it is strong enough, and light, and looks nice. Bamboo smoking pipes smoke very dry and tasty.

First people who tried to use bamboo in making pipes were Danish pipe makers. During WWII, when Danmark was occupied by Hitler, Danish pipe makers had some problems with briar supply. And they had to economize the briar by making two or more pipes from one block. So they tried a bamboo, and that was a bright idea!
Meanwhile, now pipe makers have no problems with briar supply, and don't have to economize materials. But they still use bamboo because of it's smoking and aesthetic qualities.
That's how a spesial bamboo looks:
As you see, that's not a usual bamboo, which is used in fishing rods :) It's a root of one of bamboo species. It' almost doesn't have any caves inside.
The bamboo shank is connected with the briar with a stainless steel tube, so the pipe is strong enogh. The same tube is usually used as a tenon.
